Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has dedicated this week to acts of philanthropy, community service and entertainment.

Brandon Dobson, a senior medical technology major and president of Phi Beta Sigma, said the fraternity has been holding an entire week's worth of events for the past three or four years.

"[It's] to get freshman frat students psyched about the year," said Dobson.

There have been various events going on throughout the week across campus. Melissa
Carpenter, secretary for student activities, said the fraternity assisted with the blood drive on Tuesday, hosted a wellness fair, a hop contest and a rally for the Jena 6."

Carpenter explained that a hop contest is where fraternities get together and do short dancing exhibitions.

Dobson said the rally for the Jena 6 was a fundraiser for the people affected, as well as a way to get people involved.
"We want to get people involved because it's pretty historic," said Dobson.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night there were programs discussing topics that are of importance to college students, such as relationships, STD's and making right decisions.

Rod Thurman, a senior computer engineering major and a member of Phi Beta Sigma, said the goal of the programs is to get information out about important topics. Thurman also said the philanthropy and acts of community service are to show people that the fraternities care about them too.

"We just want to help as much as we can…[we] want to make a difference," said Thurman.

Friday there will be a Greek kickball tournament, but anyone may participate. Every event going on has been and will be free to everyone who would like to come. There will be a party tonight and Saturday night to celebrate the accomplishments of the week.
